This installation explores the potential of life by focusing on the quiet resilience of moss as it spreads and thrives in neglected urban environments, in the cracks, and in-between spaces.
In urban environments, such as cities, cracks signify decaying buildings and signal the end. However, the installation prompts a rethinking of decay as a beginning and a step in the lifecycle.
Using these ecosystems as metaphors, the work reflects on the delicate balance between decay and renewal in our cities.
Moss, frequently disregarded as a mere backdrop or undesirable growth, is reimagined as a keystone species — one that fosters biodiversity and serves as an indicator of environmental well-being.Through sensory engagement and a hands-on workshop, visitors were invited to learn how moss functions, how it can be propagated, and how simple actions can support its growth in urban decay.
The project promotes ethics of care, encouraging participants to not only plant their moss using a grow-your-own kit but also to recognize and nurture existing moss in neglected, decaying urban spaces.

Re:moss is a public campaign created as part of DE/MO’s larger Biodiversity in Action initiative through the EU-funded ECHO Academy. Developed during the Campaign Design Sprint in Berlin, hosted by Public Art Lab in collaboration with the University of Europe for Applied Sciences, it explores how urgent biodiversity issues can be addressed through creative and
cultural strategies.
CAMPAIGN GOAL
Reframing decay as a site of regeneration and new beginnings.
